We’re delighted that you’re exploring the opportunity to become a Special Constable with Hampshire & Isle of Wight.
Step 1: Are you eligible?
We can only select applicants who meet our eligibility standards. Before progressing an application with us you should check to see if you are eligible for the role.
- Age – You must be at least 18 years old when making your application
- Nationality – You must be a British citizen or citizen of country within the European Economic Area. Foreign nationals are eligible to apply but only if they have indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK.
- Candidates must have been resident in the UK for the last 3 years.
- Be in good health, and of good character
- Be able to speak and write English competently
- To meet the national medical standards for policing roles, all applicants must fall within the required body mass index (BMI) range. Click here to read more about BMI requirements.
There are a number of occupations that are not compatible with also serving as a Special Constable. This may be due to factors such as the nature of the work, the industry or sector, roles and responsibilities or regulatory powers that may be attached. Step 2: Online Recruitment Awareness Seminar (optional)
Join one of our online seminars to hear from current Special Constables, ask questions, and get a clear picture of the role and what to expect. You can see all out upcoming dates and register to attend on our Eventbrite page. If you can’t find a suitable date, please email special.constables@hampshire.police.uk.
Step 3: Application Form
Complete our online application form so we have all the information we need to assess your eligibility for the role.
Step 4: National Sift
This stage includes an online situational judgement test and a behavioural style questionnaire to assess your capabilities, strengths and behaviours that are important for the role. You can find out more about this on the College of Policing’s National Sift candidate guidance web page.
Step 5: Assessment Centre
If successful, you’ll be invited to attend an assessment day where you’ll:
- Take part in a competency and values based interview
- Complete a job-related fitness test
- Provide your ID and Right to Work documents
Step 6: Pre-Join Checks
The application process ends with some essential checks, including National Police Vetting, Occupational Health Screening, and Reference Checks to ensure you’re ready to serve.
