Is there an age limit?

There is no age limit on when someone can apply for the role of Police Officer.

What will my be salary be on joining?

Officers may join at the pay point commensurate to length of service previously completed in that rank.

There are, however, no provisions to reckon, for the purposes of pay, any period of service in the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC). As a result, salary will begin at the level applicable to a newly recruited student officer.

The South East Allowance payment of £2,000 per annum will also apply.

What will my leave allowance be?

Annual leave entitlement is determined by length of service in accordance with Police Regulations. Officers may count continuous service from a non‑Home Office force, excluding the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC), and annual leave will be calculated accordingly.

Officers whose previous service is with the CNC are not able to carry this forward as continuous service. As a result, their annual leave entitlement will begin at the level applicable to a newly recruited student officer.

When will my annual leave year start?

Your leave year will start on the date you join Hampshire & Isle of Wight Constabulary. Once your leave year starts you will have your full entitlement to use in the 12 months that follows. Each year your annual leave entitlement will be refreshed on the anniversary of you joining Hampshire Constabulary.

Am I entitled to continuous service?

You may carry forward your service from a non‑Home Office force, excluding the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC).

I am a BTP officer do I have to attend the 18-week student officer course?

If you are an officer from BTP you will attend a six‑day Hampshire & Isle of Wight Familiarisation Course, designed to:

  • Introduce you to policing structures, systems, and local context
  • Ensure you are prepared to work safely, confidently, and effectively
  • Assess how your previous training, operational competence, and specialist skills can transfer

During pre-employment checks, you will complete a Training Needs Analysis to ensure you receive appropriate support, guidance, and development on joining.  Following induction, a Targeted Training Needs Analysis will be completed with your line manager to support your first three months in role and identify development priorities.

I am an officer from MDP/CNC or NCA do I have to attend the 18-week student officer course?

We are unable to take direct transfers from non-home office Forces such as the MDP/CNC or NCA . If you have previously served with a Home Office Force and satisfactorily completed the period of probationary service in the rank of constable (confirmed as substantive) then we would be able to accept an application from you under as a Rejoiner PC.

If there is any change to our eligibility criteria in the future, it will be reflected on the website.

If you would still like to join Hampshire, it would need to be via the Police Officer Recruitment route. We appreciate that this is a big undertaking, especially if you have already completed initial training with MDP/CNC* or NCA, however your previous service with MDP or NCA would be counted as reckonable under Police Regs. This means it would count for continuous service purposes and for calculation of their starting pay point.

* There are no provisions to reckon, for the purposes of pay, any period of service in the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC).

To ensure we invest in your success from day one. Here is what you can expect:

Excess mileage and expenses relating to training courses can be claimed in accordance with force policy.

The only exception to this are officers posted to the Isle of Wight. They are eligible to travel and accommodation in accordance with Police regulations.

Where will I be posted?

Where will I be able to live?

Officers have the freedom to live in an area of their choice, provided that any travelling to/from work does not adversely affect their welfare or operational effectiveness.

What probation period will I have?

A probation period of 2 years will apply, however we will recognise previous service with BTP/NCA & MDP that will count for continuous service purposes and for calculation of starting pay point.

There are no provisions to reckon, for the purposes of pay, any period of service in the Civil Nuclear Constabulary (CNC).

What skills can I transfer?

National qualifications, such as the NPPF, will be recognised upon receipt of appropriate evidence. Other qualifications will be reviewed and approved where the associated skill or qualification meets our standards. In some cases, reassessment may be required.

We recognise the value of your existing skills and will seek to retain and utilise these wherever operationally possible.

How long do I have to stay at my initial posting?

The expectation is that officers remain in each post for a minimum of 2 years before being able to request a voluntary move.

Please note that pay, tax and pension queries often relate to individual circumstances and can be affected by the timing of information we have been sent prior to you joining. The following information is provided to assist with more common questions but may vary according to your personal situation.

Will I be entered into a pensions scheme?

Officers will be contractually enrolled into the 2015 CARE Pension Scheme and periods of service in the Scheme will be aggregated to provide benefits under that Scheme on future retirement.

What if I want to opt out of the pension scheme?

Upon joining, please contact the pensions administration team for advice on opting out.

If you have any questions regarding Pensions, please email the Recruitment Team (police.recruitment@hampshire.police.uk) and we will then send these across to the Pensions Team for review and advice.
