Hear about working for us: Alex, Detention Officer
Can you tell us about your role?
I’m a Detention Officer based at Portsmouth in the Eastern Police Investigation Centre. I’m fairly new into the role after some time in CWUN (Control Room) previously and some time in NHS Security & HM Prison Service too.
Are there any particular skills you require to do the role?
I’d say an empathetic ear and the ability to talk & reassure people. Most of our clientele are at their lowest point and being able to understand from their point of view is essential to keeping detained people calm and safe.
What is the best part of your job?
I love the variety of the role. One day I could be booking people in, meeting people from all walks of life. The next I could be checking on detainees ensuring they are safe & well.
What would a standard day look like for you?
I don’t think there’s such a thing! Every day brings new people & new challenges. It’s how you work as a team & how you respond to what is presented in front of you which determines how your day goes. Some days are more difficult than others but the variety keeps you on your toes and stops the role becoming boring.
What advice would you give to someone considering becoming a Detention Officer?
Do it! It’s far from your typical 9-5. You meet people when they are at their lowest and you have to reassure them when they feel their world has just ended, you’ll be the calming presence if they’re in crisis. You’ll be one of the most vital cogs in the Policing machine. Detention Officers are one of the unsung heroes of the force and are the definition of “making a difference”.
What do you do to unwind when not at work?
One of the best things I get to do is play rugby for the Constabulary. I get to train with a great bunch of lads and represent the Force doing something I love. I also enjoy getting away down the West Country to watch my team Plymouth Argyle (for my sins) when I can down there or going out for day trips & day activities like bowling with my partner.
