Winchester University visit to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police Training Centre 2026

In 2026, we again, welcomed students from the University of Winchester to our Hampshire & Isle of Wight Police Training Centre for an immersive policing experience.

Building on the success of previous visits, students interested in a career within the constabulary, were invited to explore specialist teams, view practical demonstrations, and gain first‑hand insight into operational policing.

The day highlighted several of the remarkable teams within Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Constabulary. Senior Investigators delivered an in‑depth case study, guiding students through a real investigation from the first call to the final conviction. Our Taser Trainer provided an interactive demonstration, and the Forensics team offered insight into the many stages of forensic investigation, complete with the chance to wear a full forensic suit and have fingerprints taken. Students also experienced aspects of Public Order training in our purpose‑built training gymnasium, giving them a realistic sense of the skills involved.

These visits continue to inspire students and help shape their future career decisions, with many expressing increased motivation to pursue policing roles following their experience.

We delivered a series of mock crime‑scene sessions in local college classrooms, supporting students with their coursework while giving them practical insight into policing.

The interactive sessions placed students at the centre of a simulated crime scene, guiding them through investigative principles such as scene preservation, evidence identification, and problem‑solving. This hands‑on approach helped students apply classroom theory to realistic scenarios in an engaging and accessible way.

The sessions supported learners studying criminology, forensic science, public services, law, and policing‑related courses, while also offering a valuable glimpse into real‑world policing roles and responsibilities. All sessions were tailored to the needs of each group and delivered by experienced professionals.

Testimonials

“The session has made a significant contribution to three assignments in our unit on Crime Scene Investigation.”

“The mock crime scene session was excellent and really got the students involved. Seeing how everything works in practice helped them understand the subject far better than classroom teaching alone. They were more confident discussing investigation methods and were able to use the experience directly in their assignments. It was engaging, informative, and added real value to the course.”

Winchester University visit to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Police Training Centre 2025

In March, the Recruitment Team along with Learning & Professional Development (L&PD) hosted 55 students from the University of Winchester, as part of their degree courses.

Up until now, the Force has visited universities delivering presentations. This innovative approach meant that students studying criminology, psychology, forensics and the professional policing degree had an immersive experience in a policing environment. The impact of which proved for many to be exactly what they wanted and needed, cementing their decision to pursue a career in policing.

Several specialist units made the day a great success by providing demonstrations, interaction and hands on presentations of all the usual shiny bits, plus the new technology displayed by the Drone Unit and FCIU really struck a chord.

Public Order had live training taking place and this afforded the students a real flavour of this vital area of policing. The impression left on the students by Detective Superintendent Rod Kenny, who delivered a gripping case study, absolutely inspired the students, fuelling their desire and imagination, these students have the potential be the future of policing in our counties.
