Where do I fit in?

Police staff facilitate and support our warranted officer colleagues in their front-line delivery.

Each role has a part to play – acting like the numerous cogs in a much larger mechanism. The majority of our front line services would not operate effectively without people being vetted, recruited, equipped, trained; without our call handlers responding and dispatching, our Resource Management Team planning rota cover, our Vehicle technicians maintaining our fleet, or our Stores team supplying the kit required. Police staff roles are therefore crucial to organisational success.

Could I join the team?

Different individuals will bring different strengths to a role – varying insights, experience and ideas.

Our aim is to recruit talented people with a diverse range of skills and experiences and we welcome applications from all sections of the community. Additional support or adjustments may also be available during the recruitment process for those with a protected characteristic or those from under-represented groups.

As a detention officer you will work in the custody suite, where you’ll spend the majority of your time at the heart of the police station. Detention officers use their skills to play an increasingly important part in the way custody suites are run. They not only help in the smooth running of the station, but also provide support to detainees who are facing one of the most difficult times of their lives. The role is definitely challenging, but can also be incredibly rewarding and varied.

Life skills are important in this role, you would need to be alert at all times, think on your feet and make informed decisions. You would assist the custody officer in providing an excellent level of care to some of the most vulnerable individuals in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Detention officers are responsible for completing all aspects of the booking in process and when required, facilitate disposal procedures for detainees. They take fingerprints, photographs and DNA, record possessions and make sure detainees are safe and secure, regularly monitoring their condition and behaviour. Also, where necessary, assisting with investigative procedures and preservation of evidence, whilst maintaining the safety and security of all personnel within the custody suite.

Detention officers deal with solicitors and other agencies and answer phone calls, along with a whole host of other tasks.
